Rising Sun is owned jointly by Larry Ellison, the founder and CEO of Oracle, and David Geffen, the owner of Geffen Records and a founder of Dreamworks SKG. Rising Sun was commissioned by Larry Ellison specifically to be larger than Paul Allen's mega yacht Octopus. At 452'8" feet in length, Rising Sun is currently ranked the second largest mega yacht in the world behind Al Salamah.
Rising Sun was designed by Jon Bannenberg and built by Germany's Lürssen. She is equipped with four propellers and four MTU 20V 8000 M90 diesel engines giving an output of 36,000 kW (50,000 hp). Rising Sun reaches cruising speeds of 28 knots (52 km/h). Rising Sun was launched in 2004.
Rising Sun is rumored to have 82 rooms, over 8000 square feet of living space, and 3,200 square meters of teak deck space. Her special features include Jacuzzi bathrooms, onyx countertops, a gymnasium spa and sauna, a wine cellar, a private cinema with a plasma screen, and a top deck basketball court that can also be used as a helipad. Rising Sun also comes equipped with landing craft designed to carry an SUV ashore.
